The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam, has ordered the detention of members of a patrol team involved in the fatal shooting of a civilian on the Onitsha-Owerri Road in Onitsha.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the command’s spokesman, Tochukwu Ikenga, revealed that a preliminary investigation has identified a corporal from the patrol team as a suspect in the case.
Ikenga stated that the Commissioner’s directive is part of an ongoing investigation into the victim’s death. He added, “CP Itam has ordered the detention of the patrol team members involved in the shooting of an unsuspecting civilian along the Onitsha-Owerri Road. Preliminary findings suggest that a police corporal is implicated in the incident.”

The Commissioner has also directed that the case be transferred immediately to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Awka. He called for calm and assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted to ensure justice.
On October 13, 2023, 29-year-old Chibueze Nwakor, a father of three from Owerre-Ezukala in Orumba South Local Government Area, was reportedly shot dead near Sokoto Road, Main Market in Onitsha.

Following the shooting, the officers reportedly fled the scene in their ash-colored Hiace shuttle bus.
Nwakor’s mother, Mrs. Dorcas Nwakor, has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, seeking justice for her son.
