Police Recover Drugs, Launch Probe Into Death of American Returnee in Sagamu Hotel
The Ogun State Police Command has reported the discovery of nine different drugs and medications in the hotel room of Sunday Abidoye, a 51-year-old US-based man whose lifeless body was found at the Creestar Hotel, GRA, Sagamu, on Wednesday.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Thursday, the command’s spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, detailed the events surrounding Abidoye’s death.
She revealed that the hotel’s Chief Security Officer, Mr. Oluwole, reported the case to the police five days after Abidoye checked in, following his arrival from the United States on November 16, 2024.
According to Odutola, when police arrived at the scene, the deceased’s body had already been moved to a car outside the hotel, as preparations were underway to transport it to the morgue.
Jimoh Godday, the deceased’s brother who resides in Imota, Lagos State, told police he had visited the hotel on Monday. After receiving no response when knocking on Abidoye’s door, Room 109, he obtained a spare key from the manager and discovered his brother’s lifeless body inside.
Odutola stated, “Photos were taken, and various drugs and traditional medicines were recovered from the room. The bed’s center was soaked with a liquid-like substance. A friend of the deceased, Ogunmonti Ogunwole, confirmed that he had accompanied Sunday the previous day to purchase nine different medications due to his complaints of illness.”
The body has since been taken to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) morgue in Sagamu, where an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation, as no cause of death has been established yet.
