Police shut Hotel Over Guest’s Death In Lagos

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has returned the money extorted from an Abuja-based businessman, Damilola Adenuga, by some cops attached to the Kubwa Police Station.

Recall that the cops assaulted and extorted Adenuga on August 7, 2020, while on his way to a pharmacy around 7pm.

Adenuga, who said he initially thought that the cops were kidnappers, because they were in mufti, stated that when he attempted to raise the alarm, one of them showed him his identity card, while another snatched his phone and pushed him into their waiting van.

The victim said that the cops labelled him an Internet fraudster and threatened to kill him if he did not part with money.

Adenuga was forced to part with N100,000 before he was released by the cops.

However, Adenuga, who spoke on Tuesday, said the cops involved had been arrested and the money extorted had been returned to him.

He stated, “The PPRO asked me to come to his office and he took me to the office of the Commissioner of Police. When we got there, the officers, who perpetrated that act, were lined up before the commissioner in mufti. They confessed that they collected money from me. The commissioner then transferred the case to the Criminal Investigation Department.

“The Criminal Investigation Department took our statements and asked me to go home; the following day, I was asked to write an additional statement and a formal letter, which I did. I kept calling the officer in charge of the case to remind her about the money and she assured me that it would be returned. On Tuesday, August 18, 2020, I received the N100,000 in cash from the IPO.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, Federal Capital Territory Command, Anjuguri Manzah, however, said he had not been briefed on the development, adding that the officers involved had been apprehended and would be dealt with.

He stated, “I haven’t been briefed about the matter, but what I can tell you is that I invited the victim to my office and immediately took him to the Commissioner of Police. The officers, as we speak, have been apprehended and are going to be punished. The CP has made it clear that we must shun indiscipline in the police force; therefore, every officer must shun indiscipline.

“The Commissioner of Police has also said that any officer who defames the reputation of the police will be dealt with severely. All officers must adhere to their training and protect the people of this country.’’
