Police Shot My 15-Year-Old Brother On His Way To Church –Sibling

  • Adeniran Adejumo, brother of a 15-year-old victim of alleged police brutality

Adeniran Adejumo, brother of a 15-year-old victim of alleged police brutality, Lekan Adejumo, who is admitted to the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Oyo State, tells OLUFEMI OLANIYI how the incident happened

What is his name?

His name is Lekan Adejumo. He is 15 years old.

Is he a student or an apprentice?

He is a student. Lekan is in SS1 at CAC Grammar School, Ogbomoso, Oyo State.

Which area do you live in town?

Owode area. That is the area where the main police station in Ogbomoso is located.

What brought him to the hospital?

He was hit by a bullet.

Who shot him?

The police did.

How did it happen?

He was going to church on Sunday. I was told that he saw that many people were shouting and policemen were there as well.

Those who witnessed it said he wanted to turn back and probably take another route or return home. While trying to do that, the bullet hit him.

Immediately the police shot him, people fled and there was nobody to help until Sodiq (who is also here) and few others came to help him.

Sodiq was also shot even before he could save Lekan.

Where did the bullet hit him?

It hit his upper left arm. It pierced through and entered into his stomach.

The same bullet that hit his arm entered the side of his stomach. Some people later rushed over to help him.

At a point, he was not aware of anything that was happening around him.

Has the bullet been removed?

Yes. It was removed through surgery.

Was only one bullet removed?

I don’t know. But they told me that they had removed the bullet.

He is a bit better now, unlike before the bullet was removed. He was in severe pain before the bullet was removed.

We didn’t know he would even survive it because the pain was much and we were all crying.

Who is responsible for your hospital bill?

My mummy is the one responsible. She has been borrowing money from people close to her to save his life.

Where is your dad?

He has died.

Did the governor visit those admitted to the hospital when he came to Ogbomoso?

No. Those at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso heard that the governor came to Ogbomoso and visited some families, including those admitted to Bowen University Teaching Hospital.

We are appealing to him to assist us also. We are poor and have spent everything we have to buy drugs and other things.

He (Lekan) was not even part of the crisis. He was going to church when the bullet hit him.

Have they told you when he will be discharged?

They said he would go for another surgery on Thursday and we need money.

We also need money to buy drugs. My mum and I can no longer work because of my brother’s situation.

We are the ones running around to make sure he survives. We need help from the governor and everybody.
