  • A man was shot dead during a scuffle at a Lagos filling station on Wednesday.
  • There were reports that a DSS officer shot the victim, but the agency denied them.
  • The police have come out to say the shooter is one of their own, but did not reveal his name.

Eko Hot Blog reports that the Lagos State Police Command says it has identified the police officer who shot a young man, Toheeb Eniafe, at a filling station on Wednesday.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, made the disclosure in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Thursday evening.

Recall that Eniafe was shot dead during a scuffle with security operatives at a Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) filling station in Obalende, Ikoyi, Lagos.

Eniafe was reported to have been shot while he and some others were resisting the move by the security agents to buy fuel without joining the queue.

There were some rumours that the shooter was with the Department of State Services (DSS).

However, the secret police, in a terse statement by its spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, dismissed the rumours as false.

“The story that two DSS staff allegedly fired at a member of the public in a filling station and were also attacked by an angry mob in Obalende area of Lagos is NOT TRUE,” the statement reads.

The DSS directed further enquiries on the incident to the Police PRO in Lagos.

Subsequently, Hundeyin confirmed that the shooter was a police officer with the Special Protection Unit (SPU) Base 17, Lion Building, Lagos.

However, the police spokesperson did not reveal the officer’s name.

“The person behind the shooting has been identified as a police officer serving at Special Protection Unit (SPU) Base 17, Lion Building, Lagos,” he said.

“Investigation is still ongoing and further findings will be made available.”

Hundeyin added that the command is working with the deceased’s family to ensure that justice is served.

“Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Command is working with the family of the deceased to ensure that there is no miscarriage of justice,” he said.
