Politicians Responsible For Nigeria Security Challenges – Yahaya Bello
Yahaya Bello, governor of Kogi, says politician resort to use thugs and hoodlums to gain undue advantage during election is one of the reason Nigeria is wallowing in perennial insecurity.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Bello said this when he featured on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television programme on Wednesday.
Bello said insecurity would be a thing of the past if politicians did not employ the service of thugs to disrupt electoral processes.
The governor said the popular notion in Kogi before he came to power was that election could not be won without using thugs.
He, however, said such notion was no longer popular among the people as he won his first term and reelection without having to rely on social miscreants.
“When politicians stop the use of thugs, touts, or some group of criminals that is when we will begin to have safety and security,” he said.
When asked to comment on a statement attributed to him on the use of thugs for winning elections in Kogi, Bello said he was not referring to his own time.
He said the elections that brought him to power were fair and credible, adding that security operatives, law enforcement agencies and the intelligence world could corroborate his claim.

“You see, don’t listen too much to the lies and falsehood peddled on the media. That’s why most times when those things are going on, I simply laugh.
“Prior to now, Kogi state is a state you can’t become anything, you can’t win any election without aligning yourself with boys. Some people call them thugs, some call them touts. I say the reverse was the case in my own election and re-election.
He added there was never a time during his campaign that his supporters were accused of violence and destruction.
The governor said he knew nothing about the death of a PDP leader, who was burnt during his re-election bid, adding that information making the rounds alleging his involvement in the incident was false.
He disclosed that investigations were underway and that anyone found culpable would be punished according to the letters of the law.
“Some people might even allude to the unfortunate incident that led to the death of the PDP women leader in one of the local governments,” he said..
“And the information out there is completely false but when the truth comes out, we will equally make it public.”
