Pope Francis Believes Acceptance Of Blessings For Same-Sex Couples Will Gradually Expand, Except In Africa

Eko Hot Blog reports Pope Francis has expressed his confidence that, over time, the decision to allow blessings for same-sex couples will be accepted by a majority of people, with the exception of Africans, whom he referred to as a “special case.”

In an interview with the Italian newspaper La Stampa, the Pope acknowledged the cultural perspectives in Africa that often view homosexuality negatively.

“Those who protest vehemently belong to small ideological groups. A special case are Africans: for them homosexuality is something bad from a cultural point of view, they don’t tolerate it. But in general, I trust that gradually everyone will be reassured by the spirit of the ‘Fiducia Supplicans’ declaration by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith: it aims to include, not divide,” he stated.

Last month, the Vatican released a document titled “Fiducia Supplicans” (Supplicating Trust), which permitted blessings for same-sex couples, sparking widespread debate within the Catholic Church and globally.

The document clarified that these blessings should not be part of regular church ceremonies or associated with civil unions or weddings, reiterating the Church’s stance on marriage being between a man and a woman.

Last week, Pope Francis seemed to acknowledge the resistance, particularly in Africa, where same-sex activity can lead to severe consequences, including imprisonment or capital punishment. He emphasized that when such blessings are given, priests should consider the context, sensitivities, and appropriate ways to do it.

The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria responded to the Vatican’s decision by announcing that Catholic churches in Nigeria would not perform blessings for same-sex unions, citing it as contrary to God’s law, the teachings of the Church, the laws of the nation, and the cultural sensibilities of the people.

The bishops clarified that there was a misinterpretation of Pope Francis’s decision, stating, “The Declaration reinforces the truth about God’s mercy. For one to willingly ask for a blessing demonstrates one’s trust in God and the desire to live according to God’s commandments. Asking for God’s blessing is not dependent on how good one is. Imperfection is the reason for seeking God’s grace.”

The Pope’s vision of gradual acceptance, except in specific cultural contexts, raises questions about the ongoing discourse within the Catholic Church on matters of inclusivity and diversity.

The Church leadership’s stance on blessings for same-sex couples continues to generate discussions and reflections among Catholics worldwide.
