  • “Ebi is part of our culture and tradition in Epe. It started long time ago” – Alara of Ilara

The glamorous and enthralling Ebi festival in Ilara, Epe division of Lagos state will take place on Saturday, 15 2021.

Ebi festival is a glorious celebration associated with the indigenes of Ilara. the festival is, among other things, used to promote spiritual and ceremonial relations in the community.

The event will hold at the palace of his Royal majesty, Alara of Ilara, Oba Olufolarin Olulayode Ogunsanwo, which is located in Eredo LCDA in Epe division of Lagos state.

It’s also a remarkable celebration through which the cultural richness and beautiful customs of Lagos state are profoundly exhibited.

The festival is undoubtedly a veritable avenue for deepening and strengthening the significance of traditional institutions in an enclave where many believe their importance is being eroded and their existence somewhat threatened owing to the largely cosmopolitan and urbane nature of the state.

The camaraderie ambiance that the festival is imbued with provides for splendid social engagement as individuals and groups from far and wide who grace the festival ditch their foreign dispositions for a unique cultural, spiritual and artistic experience.

“Ebi is part of our culture and tradition in Epe. It started long time ago, about the 13th century” Oba  Ogunsanwo said “We celebrate it within the nooks and crannies of Ilara and even as far as Ijebu”

He said the month of Ebi, which is usually between March, April and May is used to worship their ancestors, divinity and “those handed to us by our fore-fathers”

According to Oba Ogunsanwo, To kick start the festival, “we have Igba Erun, which is meant for select people, especially people in charge of Oro diety. Followed is the worship of Oba Oluaiye, the god of chicken pox which will be done in some select days.”

Since his enthronement, Oba Ogunsanwo has made harnessing the tourist potential of Alara his priority, this underscores the premium and importance placed on this year’s Ebi festival as an avenue to showcase the tremendous and exceptional beauty nature has endowed the town with.

The monarch has also initiated slew of programmes aimed at giving the youth ample opportunity to fulfil their potentials and also address the social vices which are partly  engendered by high rate of unemployment in the country.

Eko Hot Blog will be on the ground to provide comprehensive and minute by minute coverage of the event.
