Port Harcourt Refinery Fully Operational, NNPCL Dismisses Shutdown Claims

  • NNPCL confirms Port Harcourt Refinery is fully operational and functional.
  • Media reports of refinery shutdown are false, says NNPCL spokesperson.
  • Fuel loading operations continue as planned despite circulating shutdown rumors.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has refuted media reports suggesting the shutdown of the Port Harcourt Refinery, affirming that the facility remains fully operational.

The refinery, with a capacity of 60,000 barrels per day (bpd), resumed operations in November 2024 following an extensive rehabilitation and is contributing significantly to the domestic fuel supply.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Contrary to claims of operational inactivity, NNPCL stated that loading operations at the refinery are proceeding as scheduled.

Reports by The Punch had alleged a halt in petrol lifting on Friday, December 13, with observations of an empty 18-arm loading bay and a minimal number of trucks—nine within the yard and 18 along the access road to the refinery.

Addressing these claims, NNPCL’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi O. Soneye, dismissed the allegations as baseless. “The attention of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has been drawn to reports in a section of the media alleging that the Old Port Harcourt Refinery, which was re-streamed two months ago, has been shut down,” Soneye stated.

He emphasized, “We wish to clarify that such reports are totally false.

The refinery is fully operational, as verified a few days ago by former Group Managing Directors of NNPC. Preparations for the day’s loading operation are currently ongoing.”

NNPCL reiterated its commitment to ensuring transparency and sustaining the refinery’s operations, which are critical to reducing Nigeria’s dependence on imported petroleum products.
