EKO HOT BLOG reports that a post-election crisis has erupted in some parts of Ogun State, as hoodlums allegedly attacked members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and a palace.
The attacks occurred in Ikenne, Remo North, and Sagamu Local Government Areas of the state, and lasted for nine days. During the attacks, which took place between March 19 and 28, some individuals were injured, while properties worth millions of naira were reportedly looted.
The victims of the attacks included the PDP House of Assembly candidate for Sagamu 2 constituency, Ayodele Olapeju, as well as Abela Kunle and Ayo Masaun, both members of the PDP. The Odemo of Isara community also suffered an attack on their palace, leading to a petition being written to the Assistant Inspector General of Police at the Nigeria Police Force Zone 2 Headquarters in Onikan, Lagos.
The petition, signed by James Adewale and copied to the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Frank Mba, requested police protection to prevent a further breakdown of law and order.
The petition highlighted a sequence of events that occurred before, during, and after the election. These events included physical assault on the PDP candidate by a group of thugs, stealing and destruction of ballot boxes, and the harassment of individuals by people who led thugs to disrupt the peace of the town under the guise of celebrating victory.
The petition also stated that the thugs attacked everyone they suspected of voting against them, harassed okada riders, brandished guns, machetes, and other weapons in broad daylight, and went to the Oba of Isara (Odemo) palace and started shooting sporadically. Several people’s houses were forced open, while others received threatening phone calls asking them to leave the town and never to return again.
“We demand the immediate arrest and prosecution of the individuals who were reported to have been causing havoc, robbery, arson, and shooting of people and properties in the town as they are proven members of secret cults,” the petition read.
Furthermore, the petition alleged that the situation escalated to the point where the incumbent member of the Ogun State House of Assembly representing Remo North State Constituency, Hon. Solomon Osho, narrowly escaped being killed after several attempts on his life were made.
Speaking to journalists, the PDP House of Assembly candidate for Sagamu Constituency 2, Ayodele Olapeju, alleged that he narrowly escaped an assassination attempt in the early hours of Tuesday, March 28.
According to him, the attack was carried out by gunmen loyal to the APC at his house in the Ewuga area of Sagamu, between 2:30 am and 3:45 am.
He claimed that the gunmen were armed with charms and weapons, and his gateman was tied up during the attack. Olapeju further alleged that the attackers ransacked his room, carted away his belongings, including four Rolex watches, gold, and everything, all together worth about N30million. They also took away his aide’s two wristwatches worth $15,000 and his Nissan Titan car worth N9m.
Meanwhile, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said he had not been briefed about the incident but promised to find out.
