Suspected vandalism of transmission towers has caused a power outage in Bayelsa State, with efforts underway to restore electricity and prevent further incidents.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Bayelsa State is currently experiencing a power outage due to suspected vandalism of two transmission towers, T98 and T99, in the Igbogene community of Yenagoa Local Government Area.

This disruption has caused the failure of two 132kV lines that supply electricity to the state from Owerri in Imo State via Ahoada in Rivers State.

Governor Douye Diri has expressed serious concern over the increasing frequency of power outages in the state. In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, on Friday, Diri lamented the return of darkness following the collapse of the two 132kV lines.

The governor indicated that the state government is collaborating with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to expedite power restoration. Engr. Olice Kemenanabo, the Managing Director of Bayelsa State Electricity Company Limited, confirmed that TCN officials are addressing the situation and requested the public’s patience.

He emphasized that this recent incident underscores the necessity for TCN to urgently establish a work centre in Bayelsa, a request the state has been advocating since 2021.

He noted that such a centre would facilitate prompt intervention and response in similar situations.
