  • Many Nigerians were amazed when the 40-year old Abdulrasheed Bawa was appointed as the new Chairman of the Nigerian major anti-graft agency, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFFC.
  • His appointment raised eyebrow especially as to what factors would have led to his appointment and who his ”godfather” was
  • Amid different controversies and moves to stop Bawa from getting confirmed by the Senate as the new EFCC Chairman, he later got the much needed confirmation and has resumed duty of his new office.

The big question is, Who helped Bawa to emerge EFCC Chairman?

Bawa was actually helped to clinch the top job at EFCC by a powerful politician in the cabinet of President Muhammadu Buhari.

To be specific, Bawa was helped to emerge EFCC Boss by the Attorney-General of the federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN). This privileged information was revealed by Malami himself when he spoke in an exclusive interview with Daily Trust,  EKO HOT BLOG   gathered.

What EFCC officials say about chair-designate Abdulrasheed Bawa?

Giving further details of how it happened, Malami disclosed that he personally tipped Bawa for the top job and went further to recommend him to Buhari for the job of EFCC Chairman.

Malami added that Bawa was eventually chosen by Buhari out of four names submitted to him for the top job. The Minister did not hide his joy that the President picked the person he (Malami) personally recommended for the EFCC Chairmanship jot at the end of the day.

Why Bawa was chosen to occupy the top post at EFCC

Bawa actually emerged the Chairman of the EFCC due to a combination of factors. First, he was lucky because if it was not by grace, he would not have emerged the chosen one.

This grace was confirmed by the fact that Buhari chose him out of four names submitted to the President of which each of them stood a chance of getting picked.

Again, Bawa was chosen due to his sterling track record of performance over the years. Malami revealed that Bawa’s track record of excellent performance convinced him to recommend Bawa for the top job.

Malami stated that Bawa headed the EFCC zonal offices in Lagos, Port Harcourt (Rivers State) and Ibadan (Oyo State) and performed excellently in his capacity as the zonal head in those zones.

So, Bawa has records of being qualified, having the capacity and having made some achievements to show that if he had performed excellently well in those smaller capacities over the years, he would do far better heading the EFCC as the Chairman.

That was another factor that convinced Buhari choose him because he is competent, quality and has track record of excellent achievements.

In Summary

Malami’s influence helped Bawa to emerge the chosen one. Malami is a trusted ally of Buhari whom the President listens to and takes his recommendations without a pinch of salt.

Malami has won several cases for the federal government and achieved some laudable feats since he assumed office as the AGN.

Consequently, he is someone that Buhari respects his choices and approves his recommendations due to the trust he has in Malami.

That was one of the major reason Buhari chose the person recommended by Malami especially when Bawa’s track record of being qualified, competent and having excellent achievements are there to support his candidacy.
