The Deputy Director, Prisoners Rehabilitation And Welfare Action, PRAWA Mrs. Ogechi Ogu Says the Non- Custodial Measures inshrined in the Nigerian correctional Service Act, 2019 is all about community correction that requires the involvement of everybody toward prevention and reduction of crime in the Society.
Mrs. Ogechi Stated this while declaring opened a consultative workshop for Government agencies and relevant stakeholders on effective implementation of Non- Custodial Measures at correctional staff college Barnawa, Kaduna State Nigeria.
The Prawa Deputy Director explained that the consultative forum workshop is targeted at bringing all stakeholders together to enlighten them on the position of the law as well as their roles in ensuring effective implementation of the new act in Kaduna State.
According to Mrs Ogechi, the new innovation had been part of the administration of criminal Justice act, Act 2015, stressing that not so much was done regarding its implementation due to lack of human and material resources.
She said the introduction of the Nigeria correctional Service Act, 2019 has provided a platform for the implementation of the non Custodial Measures using the available human and material resources of the service cut across the 36 states of the federation including FCT.
Mrs. Ogechi Ogu stated that, the new act, also known as community correction would address not only crimes that have been committed but also the behavioral and criminogenic tendencies that could predispose one to commit Crime with a view to making offenders become better citizens and law-abiding members of the society.
The workshop which was aimed at creating a platform for Government agencies and stakeholders to interface and brainstorm on strategies for effective implementation of the new law was attended by members of the judiciary, officers and men of the Nigeria correctional Service, security experts, legal aids council as well as traditional and religious leaders among others.
