EKO HOT BLOG reports that the record-breaking development was confirmed following the qualification of Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur for the Europa League final on Thursday night, May 8.
Manchester United sealed their place with a commanding 4-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao in the semi-final second leg, securing a 7-1 aggregate win. Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur comfortably overcame Bodo/Glimt with a 2-0 away victory in Norway, wrapping up the tie 5-1 on aggregate.
Prior to Thursday’s matches, England had already secured five Champions League slots through league performance, thanks to the strong European campaigns by Arsenal, Liverpool, and Aston Villa.
However, under UEFA’s competition rules, winners of the Europa League automatically qualify for the next season’s Champions League—even if they fail to finish in the top positions of their domestic league.
With both Manchester United and Tottenham currently languishing in 15th and 16th place in the Premier League table respectively, neither side stands a chance of securing Champions League qualification through domestic league standings. Their Europa League final qualification guarantees one of them a sixth slot for England—regardless of the final result.
This marks the first time any country has had more than five representatives in a single Champions League season, setting a historic precedent in European football.
