“Prerogative of Mercy”: Sanwo-Olu Approves Release of 52 Inmates in Lagos State

In a recent decision, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, acting on recommendations from the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, approved the release of 52 inmates from various correctional facilities across Lagos State.

According to a statement from Lawal Pedro, the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, 35 inmates are to be released immediately, while others will be released after serving additional terms ranging from three to six months.
According to him, the Prerogative of Mercy is in line with Mr. Governors’ powers under Section 212 (1) & (2) of the 1999 Constitution of The Federal Republic of Nigeria (As amended) and the commitment of the present administration to decongest correctional facilities in Lagos State as part of the Justice Sector Reforms in the State.
The Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy conducted a thorough evaluation of each inmate’s case, considering various factors such as the nature of the offence, length of incarceration, age, health condition, and behavioral conduct.
Prior to the release of the 52 inmates, correctional centers have been instructed to ensure that proper rehabilitation and reintegration measures are in place for those recommended for release.

This is to facilitate a smooth transition back into society for the former inmates.
The Commissioner emphasized the importance of good behavior among the released individuals and noted that the governor’s release order would be carried out following the completion of administrative procedures by the correctional facilities.
