Garba Shehu, a presidential spokesman, says the nation’s service chiefs serves at president Muhammadu Buhari prerogative, hence the strident calls for their dismissal will yield little or no result.
Speaking when he featured on Arise TV programme on Monday night, Shehu said the service chiefs will only be relieved of their duty only if the president becomes displeased with their performance.
Boko Haram insurgents unleashed terror in Borno state over the weekend, killing ove 40 farmers in Zabarmari in Jele local government area of the state.
The worsening security situation has engendered renewed calls for the sack of the service chiefs, with many arguing that aside from the fact that their tenure has ended, they have also shown over time that they can’t solve the nation’s security conundrums.
During the TV programme monitored by Ekohotblog, Shehu said there is no law stating that the service chiefs could only serve for a specific period of time.
He added that the agitation for the removal of the service chiefs was ‘out of place’

“I am not aware that the tenure of service chiefs is subject to any law or regulation that is clearly stated. They serve at the pleasure of the president,” he said.
“If the president is satisfied with their performance, he keeps them. And the buck stops on his table with all due respect to the feelings of Nigerians.
“The clamour for the sack if out of place considering that the president is not subject to the opinion of the opposition political party which has clamoured for this all the time.”
Shehu said contrary to the view of the opposition that “they have a role” in the tenure of service chiefs, it is “entirely up to him (the president) to decide”.
“He decides who he keeps as a service chief and for how long,” he added.
