Presidency Refutes Allegations of President Tinubu Ordering CBN Governor Yemi Cardoso to Resign
The Presidency has denied reports suggesting that President Bola Tinubu directed Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Yemi Cardoso to step down.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on September 17, 2024, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, dismissed the claims as false.
Onanuga referred to the report as “a bundle of lies,” asserting that President Tinubu did not issue any resignation order to Cardoso.
This denial follows a report aired by Channels Television, which implied that Tinubu had asked Cardoso to resign before his recent trip to China, despite efforts by prominent Yoruba leaders to keep him in office.
Yemi Cardoso, appointed as CBN Governor on September 22, 2023, has faced increasing scrutiny over his handling of Nigeria’s economic challenges, particularly the instability of the Naira.
Cardoso, a respected economic and development policy expert, was nominated by Tinubu on September 15, 2023, and later confirmed by the National Assembly.
The controversy surrounding Cardoso’s leadership reflects ongoing concerns over Nigeria’s economic management and the CBN’s role in controlling inflation and stabilizing the currency.
The Presidency’s clarification seeks to dispel rumors and confirm that no such directive for resignation was issued by President Tinubu.
