On September 11, President Tinubu was invited by the United States Chamber of Commerce to ring the closing bell at the New York-based stock exchange market. Shortly after the event, a statement from Ajuri Ngelale, special adviser to the president on media and publicity, declared Tinubu as the “first African president to ever receive the honour.”

However, it has come to light that Jakaya Kiwete, former president of Tanzania, rang the NASDAQ closing bell in 2011, contradicting the presidential spokesperson’s claim.

In a statement released on Friday, the presidency expressed deep regret for the error, explaining that the incorrect information was provided by a third-party event organiser.

“We have since found out that this information was/is incorrect as a former African leader has indeed had the privilege.

“This error is sincerely regretted.”
