The Presidency clarified that the suspension of import tariffs on certain food items is still under deliberation and no decision has been made yet.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Presidency has clarified the confusion regarding the suspension of taxes, import duties, and tariffs for importing certain food items through land and sea borders, including maize, husked brown rice, wheat, and cowpeas.

Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, shared a memo on his X handle on Monday evening but later deleted it.

Onanuga explained that the Tinubu administration is considering suspending tariffs on imports of rice and other food commodities, but no decision has been finalized.

Speaking with The Gazette, Onanuga admitted that the memo was mistakenly circulated across government departments and that the policy is still under deliberation. He emphasized that the Federal Government has not yet decided on the matter, stating, “The policy was mistakenly circulated. We are still deliberating internally from the agric ministry to other agencies on how best to proceed with the policy.”

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Government has published the budget performance report for the first quarter of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, covering June to September 2023.
