President Joe Biden confirmed on Wednesday that the New Year’s Day attack in New Orleans was inspired by the Islamic State (ISIS).

The perpetrator, identified as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din J from Texas, rammed a pickup truck into a crowd of revelers, killing at least 15 and injuring dozens more.

Biden revealed that the attacker had posted videos on social media hours before the incident, expressing admiration for ISIS and a desire to kill.

New Orleans police chief Anne Kirkpatrick described the attack as “hellbent on creating carnage” and noted that the driver tried to run over as many people as possible.

The attack occurred at 3:15 a.m. in a busy area filled with New Year’s Eve celebrants. After the truck collided with the crowd, the suspect engaged in a gunfight with officers, injuring two before being killed.

The FBI confirmed that the suspect was a U.S. citizen who had served in the military, both on active duty and in the reserves. Biden also reported that explosives were found in the truck and at the scene, alongside an ISIS flag. The FBI has classified the attack as an “act of terrorism.”
