Carter, who served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981, was widely admired for his post-presidential efforts in global peacebuilding and humanitarian work. His legacy of service has continued to inspire leaders worldwide, and President Tinubu reflected on Carter’s profound impact, particularly in Africa and Nigeria.

“President Carter showed us all how to remain relevant and impactful after leaving the esteemed position of President of the United States,” President Tinubu remarked in a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. “He tackled the challenges the developing world faced, from combating diseases to mediating conflicts and promoting democratic values. He exemplified grace, dignity, and a profound respect for humanity.”

Carter’s contributions to global health, especially in eradicating diseases such as Guinea worm disease and river blindness, earned him lasting recognition. Through The Carter Centre, Carter played a pivotal role in advancing health and development in Nigeria, where his initiatives led to significant improvements in public health.

“President Tinubu fondly recalls President Carter as a trustworthy and compassionate friend to Nigeria,” the statement continued. “He lauds Carter’s significant contributions through The Carter Centre, particularly his efforts in eradicating Guinea worm disease and river blindness in Nigeria, which have significantly improved the lives of many Nigerians.”

In addition to his work on health issues, Carter was instrumental in fostering better relations between the United States and African nations. His historic visit to Nigeria in March 1978 remains a key moment in the history of Nigeria-U.S. relations. During his three-day stay at the State House in Marina, Lagos, Carter’s diplomacy laid the foundation for a long-lasting and pragmatic partnership between the United States and Nigeria, with broader implications for U.S.-Africa relations.

Reflecting on Carter’s legacy, President Tinubu emphasized the former U.S. president’s enduring commitment to decency, character, and humanitarian values. “President Tinubu expresses hope that President Carter’s legacy will continue to inspire Americans and leaders worldwide to embrace the true essence of leadership,” the statement added.

As the world mourns the loss of one of the most respected global statesmen of the 20th century, President Tinubu’s tribute underscores the enduring friendship between Nigeria and the United States, as well as the profound impact of Carter’s lifelong dedication to peace and service.
