A spokesperson for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle issued a statement to PEOPLE, detailing the unnerving experience: “Last night, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Ms. Ragland were involved in a near catastrophic car chase at the hands of a ring of highly aggressive paparazzi. This relentless pursuit, lasting over two hours, resulted in multiple near collisions involving other drivers on the road, pedestrians, and two NYPD officers.”
Emphasizing the importance of personal safety, the spokesperson added, “While being a public figure comes with a level of interest from the public, it should never come at the cost of anyone’s safety.”
The incident unfolded as the royal couple, accompanied by Markle’s mother, were returning to a private residence belonging to a friend. The journey followed their attendance at the prestigious 2023 Women of Vision Awards, held at the Ziegfield Ballroom in Manhattan. Markle was honored at the event for her global advocacy in promoting female empowerment.
Tragically, the memory of Princess Diana’s untimely demise resurfaced as the car chase escalated. Princess Diana had also been pursued by paparazzi in Paris before a fatal car crash in 1997, leading to her demise.
Law enforcement authorities from the New York Police Department were involved in handling the situation. In a statement, an NYPD spokesperson acknowledged that numerous photographers had made it challenging for the royal entourage to travel. However, the spokesperson confirmed that there were no reported collisions, summonses, injuries, or arrests.
Sukhcharn Singh, a cab driver who ferried the trio during a portion of their journey, downplayed the severity of the incident. “I don’t think I would call it a chase,” Singh told The Washington Post. “I never felt like I was in danger. It wasn’t like a car chase in a movie. They were quiet and seemed scared, but it’s New York—it’s safe.”
Despite Singh’s perspective, the incident has sparked widespread concern. At an unrelated press conference, New York City Mayor Eric Adams voiced his disapproval, describing the car chase as “reckless and irresponsible.” He emphasized the importance of public safety, stating, “It’s clear that the press, the paparazzi, they want to get the right shot. But public safety must always be at the forefront.”
Mayor Adams acknowledged the tragic circumstances surrounding Princess Diana’s passing, stating, “I don’t think there’s many of us who don’t recall how his Mom died, and it would be horrific to lose an innocent bystander during a chase like this and for something to have happened to them as well.”
The incident has reignited the debate surrounding privacy and press intrusion faced by public figures. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been advocates for stricter regulations and ethical practices within the media industry, especially after experiencing their fair share of media scrutiny in the past.
