EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Chairman of the Epe local government, Princess Surah Animashaun on Tuesday paid a visit to the Epe General Hospital caring for victims of an auto crash that occurred at the traffic light at the Ita-Opo junction.

This online media platform gathered that at least six people died in Epe on Tuesday after a speeding vehicle reportedly ran into them.

The Chairman used the occasion to call on all motorists using the busy Ita-Opo junction to be aware of and obey the traffic light as this will avert such incidents witnessed on that axis and other busy roads in the community.

She also acknowledged the grievances of the people and promised that the perpetrator of the accident detained by the Epe Divisional Police would be brought to book.

The incident, which happened at about 4 pm, claimed the lives of a pregnant woman and five others occurred at the traffic light stop on Ita-Opo axis.

Witnesses said the vehicle, a Red Lexus Salon car rammed into the victims who were waiting to cross before the traffic light.

“I was here attending to my customers when some passers-by were alarmed at the excessive speed of the red car. They feared that he’d cause an accident and before we knew it, a loud bang sounded.

“The reckless driver smashed into over four tricycles within the twinkle of an eye. On rushing to the scene of the accident, three passengers had already died on the spot while some were unconscious. Later on, a pregnant mother was declared dead. I saw a woman with broken limbs while up to three young men lay lifeless on the road ” he said.

Moments after the incident, an ambulance from Epe General Hospital arrived at the scene for a rescue operation.

A team of the  Federal Road Safety Commission, Lagos State Neighbourhood Agency and other first responders also got to the scene of the incident.

Another witness account revealed that immediately after the accident occurred, the driver, a teenager of about 19 years made a call and in no time, a team of Policemen drove to the scene and arrested him.

“The driver who was in the car in the company of his girlfriend can’t be more than 19 years of age. They came out unhurt, the young yahoo boy then made a call after the accident, chewing gum as if nothing happened. Some moments later, the Police arrived at the scene and arrested him as he was about to be mobbed,” she said.

In reaction, Tricycle operators blocked the expressway in protest of their killed colleagues coupled with their badly damaged tricycles.

It was gathered that the protest claimed that the menace of yahoo boys killing their colleagues and destroying their hard-earned tricycles worth millions of naira had become unbearable.

They thereafter marched to the Epe Divisional Police Station to demand the release of the perpetrator to bear the responsibility of the loss but were dispersed with teargas and sporadic gunshots.

It was gathered that the blockage of the expressway by the protesters with their tricycles left a lot of passengers stranded while the free movement of vehicles plying the road was halted, as many commuters were seen walking to their various destinations, and others were stuck in the traffic logjam.

Mr Sunday, a Tricycle operator who spoke with EKO HOT BLOG after a truce was reached around 7:45 pm, said that the leadership of the tricycle operators pleaded with them to unblock the road and promised to look into their demands the next day.

“We were told that the damages to the tricycles would be sorted. The expenses for victims at the morgue and those of the dead who awaiting burial have been sorted by the Chairman. Other issues will be resolved tomorrow,” he said.
