The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has named Professor Hakeem Tijani, a Nigerian academic based in the United States, as one of the recipients of the National Diaspora Merit Award (NDMA) 2026 in recognition of his outstanding contributions to education.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the announcement was contained in a statement released on Saturday, confirming that the award forms part of activities lined up for the 2026 National Diaspora Day celebration.

According to the commission, the decision was conveyed in a letter dated May 22, 2026, signed by the Secretary of NiDCOM, Sule Bassi, on behalf of the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Abike Dabiri-Erewa.
NiDCOM noted that the Federal Government designated July 25 as National Diaspora Day to celebrate the contributions of more than 20 million Nigerians living abroad to national development.
The commission described the annual event as a platform for networking, advocacy and recognition of Nigerians in the diaspora who have distinguished themselves in various fields.
Explaining the basis for the honour, NiDCOM said the National Diaspora Merit Award recognises Nigerians abroad who have excelled professionally while contributing meaningfully to the development of the country.
According to the commission, Professor Tijani was selected for the prestigious award in recognition of his significant contributions to the education sector.

The award ceremony will take place as part of the National Diaspora Day 2026 celebrations, with activities scheduled for July 24 and July 25 at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
NiDCOM also encouraged intending participants to register for the events through its official website.
