Profile Of The First Female Governor Of New York Sworn-In Today

  • Kathy Hochul (nee Courtney) was born in Buffalo, New York, to John P. Courtney, a clerical worker, and Patricia Ann Courtney.

Kathy Hochul on Tuesday, August 24, 2021, was sworn in as New York’s 57th and first female governor after the resignation of embattled ex-Governor Andrew Cuomo on Monday.

Cuomo who announced his resignation two weeks ago, was caught in a web of sexual harassment allegations, and was further nailed in an investigation report by State Attorney General, Letitia James, which claimed he sexually harassed at least 11 women who had worked with him.

Early Life

Kathy Hochul (nee Courtney) was born in Buffalo, New York, to John P. Courtney, a clerical worker, and Patricia Ann Courtney.

Education

She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Syracuse University in 1980, and bagged her law degree from the Catholic University Columbus School of Law in 1984.

As a student Hochul showed her interest in politics when she led a boycott of the student bookstore over high prices at Syracuse University.

Politics

She worked her way into party politics by serving as legal counsel and legislative assistant to U.S. Representative John LaFalce and U.S. Senator Daniel Moynihan, for the New York State Assembly.

Hochul became a notable force in the Democratic Party when she ran and won in the May 2011, special election to fill the seat for New York’s 26th congressional district at the US House of Representative.

Governorship

She was selected by Andrew Cuomo as his running mate in the 2014 New York governorship election, and was inaugurated as the Lieutenant Governor of New York in January 2015. They were both reelected in 2018.

Hochul made history as the first female Governor of New York when she was sworn in by the state’s Chief Judge, Janet DiFiore in the early hours of Tuesday, 24th August 2021.

Marriage

Hochul is married to fellow lawyer William J. Hochul Jr, who served as United States attorney for the Western District of New York from 2010 to 2016.
