The festive couple married in a traditional Wedding ceremony at Harbour Point in Victoria Island, Lagos, on Sunday, December 24, 2023.

The festivities commenced with the lively entrance of the bride’s parents, accompanied by family and friends, followed by the groom’s parents, as they exchanged warm greetings.

The exchange of letters set the tone for the ceremonial proceedings.

The groom and his friends then danced in, paying respects to both sets of parents with traditional prostrations.

Prayers were offered for the groom, and his father called for special traditional musicians to play for another round of celebratory dance.

Amidst cheers and joy, the bride, accompanied by her bridesmaids, danced in, acknowledging and receiving prayers from both sets of parents.

The rich blend of Yoruba culture and religious traditions was evident as the bride selected the Qur’an from the array of gifts presented by the groom’s family.

She subsequently placed Olanrewaju’s cap on his head and they exchanged rings, sealing the sacred bond of their union. The traditional cutting of the wedding cake and joyful photographs followed.

During the ceremony, Otunba Lawal shared his observations about the courtship between Hafsat and Olanrewaju.

The bride’s father noted that he was pleased with his son-in-law having seen “nice qualities” in him, while considering him lucky for marrying his daughter.

“Hafsat used to chat with Lanre about things and other things, things I could do, so I called her and asked her who is that, she told me,” he said.

“I observed and was pleased with him. My wife was cool with him, and I told him when he came to ask for her hand in marriage to bring his parents, which he did.”

In an emotional moment, Otunba Lawal revealed, “What you have taken from my family is my heart. I saw nice qualities in Lanre, and I promise you won’t regret getting married to my daughter. It is rare to see a virgin at her age, a graduate at that.”

Recalling a humorous interaction, he shared, “I’m a very funny father-in-law. I gave her a test and told her that I understand we spoke about you keeping yourself. Since Lanre has proposed to you, allow him get intimate with you.

“But she said daddy, no. I was glad, and I pray God will bless them with children and they won’t regret knowing each other.”

In a formal acceptance of the union, Otunba Lawal declared, “I have accepted your proposal. I accept the family; I accept Lanre as my son.

“I’m a chartered accountant but had always wanted to be a lawyer. When my daughter said she was going to read law, I was happy. And when she brought in a lawyer again, I was wowed, and I could see the synergy between the two of them.”

Concluding with heartfelt wishes for the newlyweds, the bribe’s father prayed for greater unity, love, peace, and cooperation between the couple.

“On behalf of myself and my wife, Aishat Olasupo Lawal, Erelu, Yeye Yemi Lawal, we jointly, insha’Allah, accept Lanre as my son to marry into my family. I’m happy to be part of your family,” he said.

On his part, the groom’s father expressed gratitude for the presence of guests, highlighting the significance of the gathering—a celebration not only of the union between Olayemi Hafsat and Olanrewaju Abdul Lateef but also the coming together of two families.

Mr. Awe praised Hafsat for positively influencing his son.

“Observing the courtship between Hafsat and Lanre, I saw qualities that reassured me of the strength of their connection,” he stated.

“Today, I want to express my appreciation for the sincerity, respect, and love they have shown each other. Hafsat, you have captured my son’s heart, and for that, I am grateful.”

Mr. Awe also advised his son about about values—respect, love, and understanding—that should guide him in his marriage.

The groom’s father equally eulogised the bride, expressing his joy at the love shared between her and his son Lanre, welcoming her into his family.

He concluded his speech with prayers for the success of the young couples, wishing them a blissful marriage.

The celebratory mood soared to greater heights as Nigeria’s legendary musician, Commander Ebenezer Obey, thrilled the gathering with his sonorous evergreen songs.
