Prosecuting Minors AGF Fagbemi
The Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), clarified that there is no legal prohibition in Nigeria against prosecuting minors, addressing misconceptions following the recent arraignment of minors and other protesters on treason charges.
Speaking on Thursday at the inauguration of the Law Corridor’s new office in Katampe, Abuja, Fagbemi explained, “There’s a misconception about prosecuting minors, particularly in cases of treason.

Fagbemi commended President Bola Tinubu’s compassionate approach, highlighting that despite the serious nature of the charges, the President chose to release the young individuals involved, acknowledging his role as a father and grandfather.
“The President, in his wisdom and compassion, decided to pardon them, which demonstrates his empathy,” he said, noting that the decision reflected Tinubu’s understanding of family responsibilities and empathy.
Commenting on the recent Supreme Court ruling affirming financial autonomy for local governments, Fagbemi assured that its implementation would proceed in phases, pledging a commitment to seeing it through.
“Achieving full implementation takes time, but we are dedicated to fulfilling it,” he said. “The President and the public have responded positively, showing confidence in the decision.”
