Eko Hot Blog reports that in a public display of dissent, a group of elderly women, including widows, took to the streets in Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State, on Friday afternoon.

The protest was organized to express their dissatisfaction with the Supreme Court’s recent judgment that affirmed the election victory of Governor Abdullahi Sule of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), David Ombugadu, had contested Sule’s victory in the 2023 election, leading to legal proceedings.

EDITOR’S PICKS

Initially, the state election petition tribunal had nullified Sule’s victory and declared Ombugadu as the winner of the March 18, 2023 election.

However, the appeal court overturned this decision, reinstating Governor Sule. The appeal court emphasized that the tribunal had erroneously relied on the evidence of eight PDP witnesses, whose statements on oath were not presented alongside the petition.

Despite the appeal court’s ruling, the Supreme Court upheld Governor Sule’s victory, stating that the appeal lacked merit.

The protest in Lafia disrupted normal activities, with motorists forced to seek alternative routes to exit the city. The unrest prompted concerns about the need for heightened security measures in the area.

In an interview with news correspondents, a resident and automobile mechanic named Mallam Dogo Audu called for the deployment of additional security personnel to restore calm to the region.

The protest also led to the hasty closure of shops, business centers, and schools within the state capital.

The demonstration reflects the heightened tensions and divergent views surrounding the election dispute, underlining the broader implications of judicial decisions on the political landscape.
