Protest: FCT Police Deploy 4,200 Officers

In preparation for the upcoming ’10 Days of Rage’ protest scheduled for August 1, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has mobilized 4,200 officers to ensure public safety and security.

Eko Hot Blog reports that the protest, organized by human rights activists and Nigerian youths, aims to express dissatisfaction with the prevailing hunger and economic hardship in the country.

Josephine Adeh, spokesperson for the FCT police, stated on Friday that this deployment is designed to protect both protesters and the general public while preventing the protests from being hijacked by non-state actors.

“The FCT Police Command, in anticipation of the planned nationwide protest, has proactively deployed material and human resources across the nation’s capital to ensure public safety and the protection of protesters,” Adeh said.

Benneth Igweh, another spokesperson for the FCT police, assured residents that the officers are committed to protecting lives and property and will not tolerate any form of violence during the protests.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.

The statement highlighted various security measures including visibility policing, deployment of explosive ordinance devices (EOD) experts, and personnel at strategic locations.

Also, the police will conduct raids on identified black spots, uncompleted buildings, and shanties, alongside stop-and-search operations, vehicular and foot patrols, and coordination with other security agencies.

Despite appeals from the federal and state governments, including President Bola Tinubu, and calls from religious and traditional institutions for the cancellation of the protest, preparations continue.

The military and Department of State Services (DSS) have also raised concerns about potential hijacking of the protest by hoodlums.

As the ’10 Days of Rage’ approaches, the FCT police remain vigilant and ready to maintain order and safety in the capital.
