Provost Advises New Students Against Cultism

Dr Paulina Ikwuegbu, Provost, Federal College of Education Eha-Amufu in Enugu State, has warned newly admitted students to shun cultism or face expulsion from the college.

Ikwuegbu gave the warning in Nsukka on Saturday during the 26th matriculation ceremony of the college.

At the ceremony, 600 National Certificate of Education and 400 first degree students tool the matriculation vows.

The provost said the college admitted first degree students because the institution was affiliated with the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN).

She told the students that the college had zero tolerance for cultism and examination malpractice as the college would not hesitate to expel any student found guilty.

“For your information, this college has zero tolerance to cultism, examination malpractice and other vices, we will not hesitate to expel any student found guilty.

“Your mission here is to study your books and be of good behaviour so that you will graduate in flying colours,” she said.

Ikwuegbu advised the new students to always let the staff and management know when they were in difficulties in order to get required help.

“The staff and management will always be by your side to guide you and help you solve your problems that are not criminal in nature, so know it, you are not alone.

‘The way you started today is how I started some years ago, but now I am a provost, so if you work hard, tomorrow you may be a provost, a governor or even the president of this country.

“I encourage you to strive to become in future, teachers with difference, professors with passion and leaders with solutions,” she said.

She said her administration embarked on massive construction of new structures, finished abandoned ones as well as renovating dilapidated structures to ensure conducive environment for teaching and learning.

“My administration is doing everything within its capacity to ensure conducive environment for teaching and learning,” she added.

According to the provost, the college had concluded arrangement to site a bank inside the campus to alleviate the suffering of staff and students from going to town to make financial payments and withdrawal in a bank.

“We are on the verge of signing a Memorandum of Understanding with a bank for them to have an branch inside the college.

“This will be the first bank in the history of the college as there is no bank inside the college since it was established.

“Very soon, the days of going to town to make bank transactions will be over, the present administration has the interest of staff and students at heart,” she added.

In a remark, Prof Charles Igwe, UNN Vice-chancellor congratulated the newly admitted students and urged them to work hard so as to make good result on graduation.

Igwe reminded the first degree students that UNN would withdraw admission of any of them found guilty of cultism, examination malpractice or any other vice capable of tarnishing the image of the university.
“On graduation, you will be issued with UNN first degree certificate because the college is affiliated with UNN.

“Your admission today is not a guarantee that you will graduate because the university will not hesitate to withdraw the admission of any of you if found guilty of cultism, examination malpractice or any other offence capable of tarnishing the image of UNN,” he said.

The VC, who was represented by the Dean, Faculty of Education, Prof.

Joshua Omeifekum urged the students to report to any form of financial exploitation or sexual harassment for appropriate actions.

Some of the newly admitted students in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) expressed special appreciation to God, who made it possible for them to get admission.

They promised to work hard and be of good conduct so as to make excellent results on graduation.
