Russian President Vladimir Putin has made a bold move by visiting Mongolia, an International Criminal Court (ICC) member state, despite the court’s outstanding arrest warrant against him.
The warrant, issued last year, accuses Putin of war crimes related to the alleged illegal deportation of Ukrainian children.
Upon arrival in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia’s capital, Putin was greeted with a grand ceremony, complete with soldiers on horseback and martial anthems.
The lavish welcome was a stark contrast to the small group of protesters who gathered in the capital’s Genghis Khan Square, holding signs demanding “Get War Criminal Putin out of here”.
Ukraine had urged Mongolia to arrest Putin ahead of his visit, but the country has remained silent on the matter.

Mongolia has historically maintained friendly relations with Russia and has not condemned the invasion of Ukraine.
In fact, the landlocked country relies on Russia for gas and electricity and is in talks with Moscow about building a pipeline to carry natural gas from Russia to China via Mongolia.
The ICC has called on member states to take action and detain suspects with outstanding arrest warrants, but there is no enforcement mechanism.
Mongolia’s decision to welcome Putin with open arms has sparked questions about its commitment to upholding international law.
As the visit continues, all eyes are on Mongolia’s response to the ICC’s call to action.”
