Amid growing concerns over a potential arms race, Putin emphasized that Russia’s nuclear arsenal remains a critical component of its defense strategy.
Addressing questions about tactical nuclear arms, Putin underscored Russia’s commitment to its principles, asserting that the country would not hesitate to use any weapons, including nuclear ones, to safeguard its sovereignty and independence.
The remarks come against the backdrop of heightened tensions between Russia and the United States, exacerbated by disputes over arms control agreements. Putin’s comments allude to Russia’s nuclear deterrence policy, outlined in a decree signed in June 2020, which outlines conditions under which nuclear weapons may be employed.
The relationship between the two nuclear powers has been strained in recent years, with disagreements over various issues, including alleged violations of arms control agreements. While the United States extended the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) through 2026, tensions persist as Russia accuses Washington of seeking its “strategic defeat” in Ukraine.
As diplomatic efforts falter, Moscow has suspended its participation in New START, citing futility in light of perceived US objectives.
