Speaking to EKO HOT BLOG, the Secretary of Epe Community Health Committee, Olayinka Kazeem, said two cases of rape were lodged at Epe General Hospital on February 2nd 2023, one of which involved a 14-year-old girl, who was lured into the dastardly act by a miscreant at Mojoda market.
He disclosed that the victim whose mother had a fruit stall at the popular Mojoda market had taken off some pieces from the bunch of bananas to eat with her friends who were waiting for her.
Unfortunately for the teenager, she was accosted by the miscreant around the toilet area of the market and alleged her stealing and threatened to expose her.
Kazeem said that out of the innocent girl’s resolve to avoid being disgraced as a thief in the market she succumbed to the miscreant who thereafter had carnal knowledge of her right in the toilet.
Having observed her depressing mood and gloomy countenance, her friends inquired about her state of mind and she confided in them about the matter.
Her friends thereafter escalated the incident to her parents who informed the Noforija Police Station who thereafter arrested the culprit.
“I want to sincerely thank the management of Epe General Hospital, most especially, the Social Welfare department of the hospital and the nurses on duty for how they professionally handled the cases.
And, of course, the men of the Nigeria Police Force, Noforija Divisional Police Station for their swift intervention which led to the arrest of the culprit.
Also worthy of mention is the Rape and Sexual Abuse Department of Epe Police Station for their timely response on the matter,” he stated.
Kazeem assured that the Epe Community Health Committee, an extension of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Epe branch, is closely monitoring the two cases that were reported to ensure that justice is served.
He further said the fight against rape is a collective responsibility, asserted that it is no longer business as usual for rapists who blame idleness, devil or excessive sexual urge for rape.
He disclosed that the families of the victims were informed that the rape cases have gone beyond them, stressing that the practice of family settlement out of court has become bygone and that anyone who tries such would also be charged for obstruction of justice and criminal interference.
On his part, the Senior Legislative Aide (SLA) to Hon Wale Raji, the House of Representatives Member for Epe Federal Constituency, Mark Osifeko Olaniyi, described the development as a good one, stressing that same energy should be maintained in responding to other crimes in the town.
“I am happy to hear this. I hope we extend this zeal and commitment to all other crimes in different parts of Epe.
The Legal Department of all Local governments under our jurisdiction should be made to champion the prosecution of crimes in their jurisdiction.
It will go a long way to send signals to criminal elements and bring down crime. When people commit a crime and get away with it, it encourages others,” Olaniyi stated.
