Rodents, particularly rats, are closely linked to humans. That’s because people and their dwellings provide them with the things they need most to thrive. Aside from eating papers and other valuable things in the home, rats can also spread diseases, in different ways.
So many homes, especially here in Nigeria, suffer rat infestation and fight effortlessly to eliminate them.
1. Fill holes, cracks and gaps
Rats can slip into holes the size of your finger. Check your home for any opening that size and larger. Seal them up with proper materials, like steel wool, hardware cloth, caulk, cement, and plaster. Weather-strip doors and windows if there are large cracks.
Also, make sure you close doors and make proper use of nets on the windows.
2. Keep your property tidy
If it is cluttered and untidy, rats will find many hidden shelters where they can spend the winter. Remove piles of newspaper and wood and store them safely away from the house. If you’re going to use firewood, don’t carry it into the home unless you’re preparing to burn it right away. Otherwise, you risk bringing pests into your home.
3. Always keep your house dry
As well as seeking food, pests will also seek water, they are naturally attached to moist environments. Leaks in the bathroom, attics and basement provide a vital supply of water for pests.
4. Keep your surroundings clean at all times
Don’t allow leaves, twigs, branches, and other small materials to accumulate around your house. They provide ideal nests for these rats.
