Nigerian forward, Odion Ighalo has seen his named dragged into the mud after popular English sports news outlet, Sky Sports disparagingly referenced his one year spell with Manchester United.
Following an injury crisis within the club, Manchester United moved to bring in Ighalo in January 2020 from Chinese club, Shanghai Shenhua, as back-up to shore up attacking options that consisted mainly of the trio of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood.
Upon arriving Northeast Manchester, Ighalo hit the ground running, recording some impressive outings in cup competitions when called upon to represent a club he had supported since childhood.
However, all the buzz that surrounded Ighalo’s Manchester United move gradually fizzled out after an extension of his loan deal, with the signing of Edi Cavani creating further competition for starting places up front.
With Merseyside counterparts, Liverpool, currently enmeshed in an injury crisis of their own, the Kop moved to bring Ben Davies from Preston North End on deadline day to add spine to a defence currently missing Joe Gomez, Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip, prompting Sky Sports to pose a question as to whether Liverpool’s newest acquisition would turn out to be another Odion Ighalo; the implication being that the Nigerian forward’s time with the Red Devils went down the wrong side of history.
This comparison has not sat well with many Nigerians and Manchester United fans alike, who have viewed the question as a snide remark by Sky Sports to deliberately denigrate Ighalo’s spell with the club he supported long before his rise to global reckoning in the sport.
