Reactions As VP Shettima Recognises Sanusi As 16th Emir Of Kano
Vice President Kashim Shettima has stirred social media reactions after referring to Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano in a Facebook and X post.
The Vice President’s statement, shared after attending the wedding of Dr. Aishatu Kwankwaso, daughter of former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, initially included the phrase: “The wedding, which took place at the palace of the 16th Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, was conducted by the Chief Imam of Kano, Prof. Sani Zahraddeen.”
The post led some social media users to interpret it as an endorsement of Sanusi’s legitimacy to the Kano throne, despite the ongoing court tussle over the Kano Emirates’ leadership. Currently, Kano State recognizes two emirs: Sanusi and the 15th Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero.

Following public reactions, the Vice President’s post was edited to remove the specific mention of Sanusi. The updated version now reads: “The wedding, which took place at the Kano Emir’s palace, was conducted by the Chief Imam of Kano, Prof. Sani Zahraddeen.”
Despite the revision, the initial statement garnered significant attention, with many praising the Vice President for the recognition.
Social media user Alhassan Ali Lawan wrote: “We are glad for honoring the invitation, Your Excellency! We are also happy for recognizing our Emir as the 16th Emir of Kano State. Thanks once again!”

Musa Kabir added: “Masha Allah! Your Excellency, on behalf of the good people of Kano, we appreciate your attendance and recognition of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the 16th Emir. I pray for your continued success.”
The post has reignited discussions around the leadership of the Kano Emirate, as the legitimacy of both Sanusi and Bayero remains a subject of legal contention.
