The Medical Director of the General Hospital Ifako Ijaiye, Dr. Olusola Amure has called on Traditional Birth Attendants to promptly recognise pregnancy and labour complications and refer them to the general hospital to forestall maternal and child mortality.
The Medical Director gave this charge during an advocacy programme with TBAs in Ifako Ijaiye Local Council Development Area, adding that said the essence of the enlightenment is to collaborate with them to reduce childbirth mortality in Ifako Ijaiye.
Dr. Amure, who was represented at the event held at the LCDA’s Primary Healthcare Centre by the Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Dr. Omotayo Awobusuyi maintained that necessary precautions must be taken to stem health conditions that could lead to complications and resort in death or deformities during pregnancy or delivery.

He admonished TBAs not to take delivery of women with multiple pregnancies, teenagers, women over 35 years old and women who had previous delivery through caesarian operation adding that ‘any pregnant woman who is presenting high blood pressure (130\85), anaemic or diabetic should be referred as a matter of urgency.
The Head of Nursing Department, Mrs. Funmi Ojo urged the TBAs not to delay in referring to any pregnant woman who refuses to fall into labour after the due date and enjoined them to always wear gloves during delivery, sanitise their delivery tools and disinfect their work areas.
Responding, the Chairman of the Traditional Birth Attendants Association in Lagos State, Mr. Gbenga Osho expressed appreciation for the programme, promising that members will not engage in any activity that will tarnish the image of the association.
