The allegations against Okoye were made in a petition filed by Mr. Obiora Stephen Nnam, who claims that Okoye, his tenant, forged a rent receipt after the caretaker of the property passed away. According to Nnam, Okoye claimed to have paid five years of rent in advance.
Nnam further stated that his attempts to collect outstanding rent from Okoye have been met with threats, intimidation, and hostility.
He is now appealing to the police to investigate the matter and help recover his property and unpaid rent.
Okoye, however, denies recognizing Obiora as the owner of the property while the former caretaker was still alive. He asserts that despite having interacted with Obiora in the past, there was never any indication that Obiora was the landlord.
Okoye claimed that the late caretaker informed him that the landlord was based in India, and on several occasions, he communicated with the landlord through the caretaker’s phone.
Okoye said he was later told by the caretaker that the landlord was involved in a local project being managed by the caretaker.
Apparently, the landlord encountered financial difficulties and requested Okoye to pay five years’ worth of rent in advance, totaling N3 million. Okoye said he managed to pay the requested amount.
