EKO HOT BLOG reports that the sum was raised through a six-month 50% salary cut pledged by lawmakers in July, following a motion by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu. The initiative aimed to address hunger and provide relief to Nigerians struggling with economic difficulties while easing public dissatisfaction over governance challenges.
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, during Thursday’s plenary, confirmed that the lawmakers had fulfilled their pledge and highlighted the gesture as a testament to their commitment to alleviating Nigerians’ plight.
“This contribution demonstrates the steadfastness and dedication of members to addressing critical needs,” Abbas said.
The money will be handed over to the President for exclusive use in supporting the country’s most vulnerable citizens. Kalu, while proposing the salary cut, emphasized the need for sacrifice during challenging times, urging colleagues to prioritize the welfare of Nigerians.
The House’s donation is part of broader efforts to mitigate the economic hardship triggered by subsidy removal and to foster public trust in government policies.
