EKO HOT BLOG reports that the meeting, which had faced several delays, is seen as a key turning point in the federal legislature’s intervention following the breakdown of governance in Rivers State.

In his remarks to the committee, Ibas apologised for his earlier absence, explaining that he needed more time to properly prepare for the session as he is still adjusting to the responsibilities of his new role. He appealed for the committee’s patience and pledged cooperation as he settles into the position.

Shortly after his address, the committee moved into a closed-door session, requesting journalists and media personnel to vacate the meeting room.

Ibas’ appointment came after President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers, effectively removing Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and all members of the state House of Assembly from office. The decision followed a prolonged and worsening rift between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), over control of the state’s political structure.

The face-off between the two powerful figures had plunged Rivers State into a constitutional and political deadlock, prompting the Presidency’s unprecedented step to impose emergency rule and install a sole administrator.
