Reps Special Committee Joins Forces with Military to Combat Oil Theft

The committee, led by Chairman Alhassan Ado-Doguwa, expressed appreciation for the recent achievements of the military and security organizations in safeguarding government facilities and uncovering facilities involved in illegal activities.

During a visit to the Office of the Chief of Defence Staff in Abuja, Ado-Doguwa commended the military for intercepting an illegal crude oil vessel loaded with thousands of metric tonnes of crude oil, as reported during an inspection by General Chris Musa and officials from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.

The chairman pledged continuous legislative scrutiny and amendments to the Petroleum Industry Act, ensuring the robust functioning of the nation’s oil sector.

He reiterated the House’s commitment to developing legislation aimed at enhancing the socio-economic well-being of oil-producing communities. Ado-Doguwa also urged community leaders to discourage any actions that sabotage the economic potential of their areas.

In response, General Chris Musa assured the committee of the readiness of the Nigerian military to intensify efforts in securing the nation’s oil and gas assets. He expressed concerns about the delay in prosecuting individuals arrested for oil theft, emphasizing that swift legal actions are essential to discourage criminal activities and support the government’s economic objectives.

“I give you the assurances of the men and officers of the Nigerian Armed Forces under my watch of our commitments to collaborate and work with this committee for the good of our great country and indeed, our people,” stated General Musa.

The collaboration between the House of Representatives Special Committee and the military reflects a concerted effort to combat oil theft, protect national resources, and promote economic development in Nigeria.

The ongoing commitment of both entities demonstrates a shared determination to address security challenges and ensure the sustainability of the nation’s vital oil and gas sector.
