At the recently concluded Nigeria Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) 14th International Conference, Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, emphasized the critical role of research in driving national development.
According to him, “The heartbeat of any country is development, and any nation that prioritizes research is on the path to success.”

Speaking at the event, Prof. Abayomi highlighted NIMR’s commitment to advancing health-focused research to address critical medical challenges.
He praised the institution’s efforts and noted that research plays a pivotal role in improving healthcare outcomes.
The Commissioner commended other key institutions, including the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) and the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), for their significant contributions to impactful research in the health sector.
Prof. Abayomi also reflected on the country’s ability to leverage research during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He attributed the reduction in mortality rates to collaborative research efforts, which provided critical insights and informed effective strategies.
“Any country that fails to focus on research is planning to fail,” he asserted.
During an interview with EkoHotBlog, Prof. Abayomi expressed his gratitude to NIMR’s Director-General, Prof. Babatunde Salako, for his dedication and hard work in steering the institute towards groundbreaking achievements.
He further assured that Lagos State would continue to collaborate with NIMR to maximize the outcomes of its research for the benefit of residents.
Prof. Abayomi stated, “Lagos will leverage NIMR’s research capabilities to actualize the state’s health objectives and improve the quality of life for all.”
