FEC meets to address the ongoing minimum wage disagreement between government and labour
Eko Hot Blog reports that today’s crucial meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) is set to address several pressing issues affecting Nigeria, with a particular emphasis on resolving the ongoing minimum wage dispute.
Following the last session held on May 13th and 14th, FEC meetings now occur every Monday, a directive issued by President Bola Tinubu to replace the previous Wednesday schedule.
According to a report by Daily Trust, the primary focus of today’s agenda is the contentious minimum wage standoff involving the federal government and organized labour groups.
Recently, a tripartite committee submitted a report acknowledging the federal government’s ability to increase the minimum wage to ₦62,000. However, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), representing organized labour, insist on a minimum wage of ₦250,000.
Today’s meeting holds significant importance as it aims to bridge the gap between the government’s proposal and the demands of labour.
The council in today’s meeting, is expected to thoroughly assess labour’s position alongside what the government can feasibly manage. This is expected to lead to the drafting of an executive bill aimed at resolving the wage issue, which will subsequently be presented to the National Assembly.
The resolution of the minimum wage debate is of significant importance. It not only affects millions of workers but also has broader economic implications in terms of purchasing power and consumer spending.
