Retired Soldiers Resume Protest Today Over Unpaid Pensions

Retired military personnel are preparing to resume their protest today (Tuesday), demanding the government fulfill its promise of settling outstanding entitlements.

This follows their previous action in December 2024, where they shut down the Ministry of Finance over unpaid benefits.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the retirees are raising concerns about several unresolved issues, including a 20%-28% salary increment for the period between January and November 2024, unpaid palliatives from October 2023 to November 2024, an additional N32,000 pension increment, full payment of the Security Debarment Allowance, and the refund of pension deductions from medically boarded soldiers’ salaries.

Although these payments were approved by the government, they have yet to be disbursed, with officials citing insufficient funds as the cause for the delay.

In their December protest, the Ministry of Finance released 50% of the owed entitlements and promised to settle the balance before the end of the year. However, according to Chief Aliyu Umar, a veteran leader, the government has not honored its commitment.

“We are coming out in full force tomorrow. We have been deceived,” Umar said in a phone interview with The PUNCH on Monday. “Do you remember our protest last time? We were promised 50% payment, which was delivered, but since then, there’s been no progress.”

Efforts to contact the Ministry of Defence spokesperson, Henshaw Ogubike, for comments were unsuccessful at the time of this report.
