Make 70 Retirement Age For Politicians – LP Tells National Assembly

The Labour Party (LP) has called on the National Assembly to enact a bill barring politicians above 70 from contesting for presidential, governorship, and other elective positions ahead of the 2027 elections.

The demand was made at the 2024 Annual Meeting and National Youth Conference in Abuja by the party’s National Youth Leader, Kennedy Ahanotu, and Benedict Etanabene, a lawmaker representing Okpe/Sapele/Uvwie Federal Constituency. Other attendees included LP National Chairman Julius Abure, National Secretary Umar Farouk, state youth leaders, and national delegates.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Ahanotu argued that just as civil servants retire at 60 or 65 due to diminishing productivity, politicians should have similar restrictions.

He lamented the lack of opportunities for younger generations in leadership, despite promises of being “future leaders.” Citing examples from France and Senegal, where presidents assumed office in their 40s, he emphasized that younger leaders are more energetic and innovative.

“Any politician from 70 years and above should be stopped from contesting elections.

“This will free up positions for the younger generation to take on national responsibilities,” Ahanotu said.

“He also urged President Bola Tinubu to propose an executive bill legalizing the use of BVAS and electronic transmission of election results to improve Nigeria’s electoral transparency.

Echoing this sentiment, Etanabene linked Nigeria’s economic challenges to aged leaders who may lack the energy and innovation to govern effectively.

He criticized the diminishing productivity of older politicians and highlighted the agility and capacity of younger candidates presented by the LP in the 2023 elections.

“Leaders above 60 belong to the analogue era. For Nigeria’s economy to recover, we must retire them and pave the way for youthful, energetic leaders,” Etanabene stated.

The call reflects growing dissatisfaction with the dominance of ageing politicians and a push for generational change in Nigeria’s leadership.
