Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom has described as repressive the Federal Government’s reaction to a Christmas message by the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Matthew Kukah.

Ortom asked the Federal Government to address the worsening security situation in the country instead of trying to muzzle patriotic Nigerians who raise genuine concerns.

“The renowned Bishop is not the first to call on the leadership of the country to strengthen security agencies and be proactive in combating the wave of violence and killings in parts of the country.

“Many other Nigerians have been making the same call on a daily basis. He was not the first to suggest that the President should be the father of all and not of only a section of the country or a particular ethnic group,” a statement by Chief Press Secretary, Terver Akase quoted Ortom as saying.

He however urged the Federal Government not to politicise the concerns raised by the Bishop but should instead review them to avoid throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

Eko Hot Blog had reported that Bishop Kukah said in his Christmas Message titled, ‘A Nation in Search of Vindication,’ that Nigeria could have experienced a coup if the incessant killings were carried out if a Southerner was at the helm of the country’s affairs.
