EKO HOT BLOG reports that Liverpool legend John Aldridge has expressed his concern that teams are no longer intimidated by the club, as they have been in previous seasons. The Reds are currently seventh in the Premier League table, with a six-point gap to fourth place and Champions League qualification.
Jurgen Klopp’s side has struggled defensively this season, having conceded seven goals within the first ten minutes of games. Aldridge believes that teams are now attacking Liverpool from the first whistle, and that the Reds have struggled to cope with the pressure.
“I think teams this season are not scared of us as much as they used to be,” Aldridge said in an interview with LFC TV.
“In the last five years, teams have been tentative and scared to leave their defence line and go forward because Liverpool were that good on the counter attack. But this season, teams have been like, ‘just show them that we are not scared, we are not intimidated and have a go.’ And we have succumbed too many times.”
Aldridge suggested that Liverpool’s struggles began at the start of the season, when they suffered a number of defeats. He believes that this gave other teams confidence and emboldened them to attack Liverpool.
Despite their difficulties, Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand recently tipped Liverpool to sneak into the top four and secure Champions League qualification for next season. Klopp’s side faces a crucial end to the season, with games against Manchester United, Southampton, West Bromwich Albion, Burnley, and Crystal Palace still to come.
Liverpool will be hoping to rediscover their form and secure a top-four finish, as well as potentially winning the upcoming UEFA Champions League final against Real Madrid on May 29th.
However, they will need to improve their defensive record and find a way to cope with teams who are no longer scared of facing them.
