The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has clarified that each of the 109 senators in Nigeria’s Senate receives a total of ₦1,063,860 per month in salary and allowances.

This clarification comes in response to statements by former Senator Shehu Sani, who claimed that senators receive a monthly running cost of ₦13.5 million in addition to the ₦750,000 monthly allowance prescribed by the Commission.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo had recently condemned the practice of lawmakers setting their own salaries, calling it ‘immoral’ and arguing that the RMAFC should handle these determinations.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that in a statement on Tuesday, RMAFC Chairman M. B. Shehu detailed the breakdown of a senator’s monthly earnings.

This includes a basic salary of ₦168,866.70, along with various allowances: Motor Vehicle Fuelling and Maintenance – ₦126,650.00, Personal Assistant – ₦42,216.66, Domestic Staff – ₦126,650.00, Entertainment – ₦50,660.00, Utilities – ₦50,660.00, Newspapers/Periodicals – ₦25,330.00, Wardrobe – ₦42,216.66, House Maintenance – ₦8,443.33, and Constituency Allowance – ₦422,166.66.

Shehu explained that some of these allowances are paid regularly with the basic salary, while others are non-regular and paid as needed.

For example, the Furniture Allowance and Severance Gratuity are paid once per tenure at ₦6,079,200.00 each, while the Vehicle Allowance, totaling ₦8,105,600.00, is provided as a loan that must be repaid before leaving office.

Shehu said RMAFC does not have the constitutional powers to enforce compliance with the proper implementation of lawmakers’ remuneration packages.
