EKO HOT BLOG reports that the leadership of the prestigious Epe Ogunmodede Club has donated three traffic control stands to road traffic officers in Epe Local Government as part of the club’s corporate social responsibility.
The club donated the traffic booth on Sunday 14t August 2022 in a swift response to the prevalent cases of tragic road accidents experienced on the intra-city expressways in the community with a bid to mitigate the rate and fatalities of road traffic crashes in Epe.
The Club members, led by the president, Barrister Omodele Ibrahim, defied the morning downpour, to donate the traffic stands to the Chairman of Epe Local Government, Princess Surah Animashaun, who was represented by Mr Ibrahim Oyase.
The traffic booth was thereafter handed over to representatives of the Nigeria Police, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
Speaking in an interview with EKO HOT BLOG, Barrister Omodele stressed the urgent need to adequately sensitise road users in the community, particularly tricycle and motorcycle riders, in a bid to arm them with the needed knowledge to forestall future occurrences.
“We will continue to carry out road advocacy and sensitisation for road users. I think our road users especially tricycles, and okada riders believe the traffic regulations only regulate motorists and not other users of the road.
So as against that, we need to continue to educate them that everybody, including pedestrians, is governed by road traffic law. We’ll continue in that process of sensitisation and advocacy, you will see a lot more coming soon in the terms of collaboration with road traffic agencies and security agencies,” he said.
Barrister Omodele expressed delight about the knowledge-sharing moments delivered at the event as various stakeholders in the transport sectors made wholesome contributions. In particular, was the fact that the intake of drugs and lack of concentration by road users were the causes of the avoidable tragedies on Epe roads.
The immediate past president of the club, Mr Saliu Okulu, in his address, expressed shock at the death of sixteen commuters in a recent car crash around Alaro City while also lamenting the avoidable deaths of seven passengers recently in Ita-Opo.
While he prayed that the families are bestowed with the fortitude to bear their irreparable loss, he commended the leadership of the club for a job well done.
Mr Taiwo Oresanya, the Chairman of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), during his goodwill message provided insights into the activities of commercial drivers under his care, where he stressed the intake of drugs and alcohol is prohibited for drivers.
He further said the cooperation of his boys against the above acts created room for minimal road accidents while on the other hand most tragic road crashes are orchestrated by private car owners whom he said were either under the influence of drugs, or alcohol, and acted above the law, lost concentration while driving.
On his part, Mr Promise Iriogbe, a Federal Road Safety Corps officer noted that a group of transporters, the Keke and Okada riders, were culpable in terms of disobeying road traffic laws.
He further said the agency would not relent in its efforts to sensitise them.
While he noted that tragic car crashes were avoidable, he said road users must be wary of the three factors that cause accidents such as mechanical, environment and human.
He said the human factor contributes to 80% of road accidents due to disobedience to simple traffic regulations.
He applauded the initiative and promised to make wise use of the traffic booths.
