Throughout their history, including four European Championships, Scotland have competed in 12 major tournaments but have never advanced to the knockout stages.
Robertson says the chance to become a “legendary squad” has motivated the team as they prepare for their tournament opener against hosts Germany on Friday night.
“We don’t want to have any regrets,” the Scotland captain said. “What’s the worst that can happen?
“The worst that can happen is that we join a long list of so many good Scotland teams that failed to make it through the group.
He added, “We know that’s what’s at stake. We’ve got a lot of incentive to do well, but one is becoming that legendary squad; that has to drive us forward.
“We’ve got a lot of motivation but that one for me is driving us forward.
“You never know what can happen in the knockout stages but we have to get there first.
“We believe we can be the team that makes history.”
Their first challenge will be facing a formidable German side, considered one of the favorites for the trophy.
Robertson acknowledges Scotland’s underdog status in the match and emphasizes Toni Kroos as a significant threat in Julian Nagelsmann’s team.
“It’s no secret that Germany will probably dominate possession, they’ve got the best midfielder in the world in Toni Kroos.
“But when we have the ball we have to capitalise on it.

“We have to be composed, we have to be difficult to beat, try and frustrate them as much as we can.
“If we can do that, hopefully it’s enough to get a result,” he said.
